{Sentinel Blog Tour} Apollyon Day!

I'm super excited to be a part of the blog tour for Sentinel.
I fell in love with Alex's story back when I'd read Daimon, and I've been hooked ever since. Even though I love all of Jennifer's book, this series will always be my favorite of hers.

Since there were no ARCs for Sentinel, Spencer Hill Press has asked bloggers to reflect back on the other books, leading up to the publication of Sentinel. My book to reflect back on is Apollyon!

Book summary for Apollyon:

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

My Review for Apollyon (which I originally posted here on 5/12/13):
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First off, I would like to apologize to Spencer Hill Press for taking so long to post this review. I meant to post it two months ago; unfortunately, things have been a bit crazy on my end. Sorry!

I thought that Deity destroyed me. I was wrong. Apollyon nearly killed me.

What I love most about Jennifer’s books is that it really is easy to lose myself in the world she creates.

Apollyon was no different.

Oh. My. Gods. What a ride.

I’m going to try to make this a worthwhile review, while also making sure to skip over any spoilers (because this is not a book you want spoiled for you, at all).

If you read Elixir, which you really should before diving into Apollyon, you’ll have an idea of what to expect since it pretty much picks up where that novella leaves off.

Alex is still unstable, and Aiden is still doing his best to help her. He refuses to give up hope that she is still in there – that there is a way to break the connection to Seth. It’s an emotional way to open the story, but it definitely prepares readers for the tissue fest that lies ahead. (Don’t worry, there is still plenty of action, but there will be tears, people.)

This story focuses a lot on Alex’s growth as a character. She’s not the same snarky brat we first met back in Daimon. She’s a lot more mature, a lot more selfless, and a lot stronger. She has gone through so much, but it is nowhere near what she is forced to go through in this book. (Seriously, that ending? Gah. You’re killing me, Jenn!)

A few other things worth mentioning:

Aiden: The relationship between Aiden and Alex is perfect, especially with this installment. He is Alex’s rock, and even though she’s more than capable of taking care of herself for the most part, I don’t think that she would’ve been capable of the things that she did in Apollyon without him. He rooted her, gave her strength, and vice versa.

Death: There is one death in this book that really, really got to me. It wasn’t a character that I particularly cared for early on, but as the series progressed, I really came around to them. And the way the death was written, it was incredibly heartbreaking.

The final battle: When our mystery guest arrived, I had an idea of who it would be, and while I was right, I wasn’t expecting THAT. I was on the edge of my seat during that chapter.

Seth: My thoughts on Seth kept going back and forth. At times I hated him, and at times I felt for him. It isn’t easy to make readers feel sorry for the villain of the story, but Jennifer managed to make me care about him.

I wasn’t expecting the emotional punch that I received from this book. At all. And even though it hurt, I loved every second of it. It gives you an idea of what is coming with the final installment, Sentinel.

I’m going to be sad to see this series end later this year. I’ve come to really love these characters (with some exceptions) and it is going to suck to see their stories come to an end.

If you’ve been putting this series off, you’re crazy. This is a must read series!

Description from Goodreads:
Between the pissed off creatures that want demon-hunter Lily Marks dead and the fallen angel who just...wants her, Lily is about ready to trade in forever for a comfy job in a cubicle farm.

The fact that she and Julian are civil to one another is enough to have her thrown out of the Sanctuary, but she can't shake her not-so-angelic stalker or how he brings her dangerously close to ecstasy.

Her forbidden relationship with Julian provides the perfect fuel for suspicion when a traitor is discovered to be working within the Sanctuary. Lily quickly finds herself hunted by well, everyone.

Her only hope is to discover the real traitor before she loses everything--and she'll need Julian's help. That is, if Julian is really there to help her...and not destroy her.

Yeah, being a Nephilim isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

My Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First off: I need to point out that Unchained is an adult title. It is not a YA title. At all.

With that said, I adored Unchained. It kind of reminded me of a mixture of Jennifer’s Covenant series and her Lux series – just written for adults. That may sound like a bad thing, but it isn’t, I promise!

Unchained has the sass and romance that readers have come to expect from Jennifer’s books, and it’ll easily keep readers glued to their e-readers (since this is a digital only release – as of right now, at least). It’s that addicting!

My initial thought when I finished Unchained? I have a new favorite JLA book.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Unchained since it was originally announced, so when Entangled was holding giveaways for digital ARCs, I immediately jumped at the chance. And I’m so glad that I did.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to review this one since I finished it yesterday. The problem? I don’t want to spoil anything, because there is a pretty big plot twist in this one that changes everything. So, instead I’m going to make a list of reasons why you need to read this book:

1. Lily and Julian: Remember how I said that I had a new favorite JLA book? Yeah, well I also have a new favorite JLA book couple (sorry, Alex and Aiden).
2. Michael: Okay, so I wasn’t entirely sold on him in the beginning, but as the story progresses and he comes to terms with this world, he becomes more likeable. And by the end? I absolutely loved him. (Seriously, you’ll understand why when you finish the book.)
3. Lily Marks: Lily is awesome at her job. She can easily take down most of the guys at the Sanctuary. But that isn’t the only side of Lily that we get to see in Unchained. There’s also this vulnerable woman beneath her title – her duty – and we get to see that, and I loved that, because it made it easier to connect to her character.
4. The plot twist: Jennifer, are you trying to kill me here? I did not see that coming, and it made me want to scream, because I liked ________ before that scene. Seriously though, even though that plot twist shocked the hell out of me, I loved where Jennifer took the story.

I could keep listing things that I loved about this book, but as I said, I’m trying to avoid spoilers.

My final word: You need to read this book. Now. (Really. Now would be a good time.)

Book Review: "Deity" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Deity (Covenant, #3)Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Paperback, 360 pages
Expected publication: November 6th 2012 by Spencer Hill Press
Pre-Order: Amazon -- Barnes & Noble
Description from Goodreads:
"History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time. "

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

My Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My first reaction after finishing Deity: What the hell just happened?

I’ve never read a book that screwed with my emotions as much as Deity.

I don’t even know where to begin without spoiling anything, because there is so much that happens in Deity. So. Much.

Earlier on in the series we learn about Alex being the second Apollyon. In PURE, we learn that she is considered a threat and that the Furies want her dead.Well, I thought shiznit (trying to keep it PG here) went down in Pure…but I was wrong. Deity takes it to a whole other level.

Deity is built upon secrets. Everyone has one - some of which can be harmful to others. Alex has grown a lot since the beginning of the series. She’s always been a tough heroine, but she’s finally beginning to see that knee-jerk reactions can be problematic.

She’s killed her mother. She’s lost her best friend. And she has found out that she is the second Apollyon; and that by fate, she is destined to be one with Seth. Enough for any teenager to have to deal with, right? Nope. Alex’s life gets turned upside down in Deity. She’s running off of hope that she can stop the First from becoming the God Killer. But hope isn’t enough.

Honestly, this is a hard book to review because I really can’t justify spoiling the story. No matter how much I may want to talk about all the feelings I have right now. My Aiden fangirl is happy, or she was happy until, you know…but my Seth fangirl? My heart is hurting.

As someone who isn’t really a fan of love triangles (something I’ve stated before), I found myself worried when I started Pure last year. But then when I finished Pure, and saw where Armentrout was taking the story, I found that I didn’t mind the love triangle. In fact, going into Deity, I was actually a fan of both boys. But then my Seth fangirl died out about halfway in – it’s hard not to like Seth, until you reach the mid point in Deity. That is all I’m saying on that one. That. Is. All.

Deity made me want to throw my book across the room numerous times, and to me, that just shows how great Armentrout is at her craft. Because when a reader is that invested in characters from a book, the author has clearly done something right.

Oh, and that ending? I need the next book pronto!

Book Review: "Cursed" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

CursedCursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Hardcover, 312 pages
Expected publication: September 18th 2012 by Spencer Hill Press
Review Copy: Purchased
Purchase: Amazon -- Barnes & Noble

Goodreads description:
Dying sucks--and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not've been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

My review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When I finished reading Cursed, I found myself eager for me. It is meant to be a stand-alone, but I hope that Armentrout decides to turn this one into a series down the line because I absolutely adored Ember and Hayden.

At only 288 pages, Cursed is a quick read that readers will easily lose themselves in. I adore Armentrout’s Covenant series, as well as her Lux series, but I think Cursed might actually be my favorite of her titles. (I swear I say this every single time she release a new book, but it is true.)

The story is set around Ember McWilliams and her younger sister, Olivia. After she and her father were killed in an accident – that led to her sister bringing her back to life – things for Ember have been tough. Her mother seems to be tuned out, unable to care for either her or her sister, leaving everything on Ember’s shoulders. That’s bad enough for any teenager, but when you also have the ability to kill someone with your touch? Well, that just makes things even more difficult.

What Ember doesn’t know is that since the accident, people have been watching over her and her sister, and they know what both girls are capable of. When they bring the girls to an isolated location, she is left to wonder what they want with her, and what they are going to do to both her and her sister.

But just when Ember thinks she knows what is going on, the truth is finally revealed, and it’s far from what she could’ve ever expected.

Cursed was full of suspense, and a romance that’ll make Armentrout’s fans happy. The relationship between Ember and Hayden kind of reminds me of Alex and Aiden (that isn’t a bad thing). There were times when I wanted to scream at both Ember and Hayden, but the way Armentrout built their relationship was wonderful (there are plenty of swoon-worthy moments between them, I promise).

Honestly, my only problem with this book is that it ended.

I need moreeeeeeee.

Some of the pre-order copies went out early, which is why I was able to read it already. But the title will finally be released on the 18th - in hardcover (the first for Armentrout) - so you should definitely pick up a copy. :)

My Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jennifer has done it again, folks.

Jennifer has a way of pulling readers in from the very first word, leaving them completely lost in her words until the very final page. The character development alone in ONYX is utterly fantastic, and the romance isn’t too shabby either. ;)

ONYX is everything that a sequel should be. In fact, for me, ONYX is even better than OBSIDIAN.

I adore Armentrout’s Covenant series, I do, but the LUX series may just be my favorite out of the two. Alex is a kickass heroine, yes, but Katy? She’s tough in OBSIDIAN, but Katy in ONYX? Everything that she goes through in this novel forces her to fight for the things that she cares about, and boy, does she fight.

Since I could go on all day about this one, I’m going to highlight what I think needs to be discussed:

Let’s start by going back to SHADOWS, shall we? I know that some readers prefer to skip over novellas that are released in between the next series installment, and I can understand why. Some of the novellas can be filler material (when I say some, I do mean some – most of them do actually move a series along). But if you’re planning on skipping SHADOWS and jumping right into ONYX? I’m going to have to suggest you reconsider. Yes, we hear about Bethany and Dawson in OBSIDIAN, but when I say that it is vital that you read SHADOWS, I do mean it is vital.

Now that we’ve got that covered:

Daemon Black: In ONYX, we see an entirely different side to Daemon, and I do mean an entirely different side. Yes, he’s still sarcastic, and at times, he can be a jerk. But in ONYX, we get to meet the softer side of Daemon, the side that discusses feelings, and actually makes it a point to showcase his emotions. In OBSIDIAN, there's a blossoming romance between Daemon and Katy, but in ONYX, it finally develops into something more. (Fangirl translation: OMGgjidhgkdhkhYEShghkhgfkhfgkYAYfkhkgh).

The new guy: I’m not going to go into much detail here, as I don’t want to ruin anything. I will just say this: within the first few pages of his character being introduced, you’ll develop a certain feeling towards him, and chances are that you’ll be right.

The action: Oh, hello there, action! There is so much that goes on in ONYX. It is undeniably a darker story than OBSIDIAN is. There’s a ton of action, but it isn’t overdone. Jennifer manages to balance it well, never overdoing it or throwing it in just because. The only downside to the action scenes is just how emotional there are; I don't think I've ever screamed at a book so much (my emotions were all over the damn place during the action scenes).

Katy: As I’ve already stated, Katy grows throughout this story. The girl at the end of ONYX is a far cry from the girl at the beginning of ONYX.

The ending: Holy. Smokes. Did that actually just happen? Seriously?! And now I need to wait for the next book? You’re killing me, Jenn. You’re killing me, but it’s okay.

I love where Jennifer is taking this series. The ending of ONYX will leaving you desperate for the next book, yes, but it doesn’t end on a terrible cliffhanger (thank you for that one). It’ll be interesting to see what happens next with Daemon and Katy, and well, with a certain character back in the picture.

If you haven’t done so yet, I’d suggest pre-ordering ONYX, and while you're at it, you should plan on skipping work (or canceling whatever plans you have on the release day), because once you start reading this one, you’re not going to be able to put it down.

Review: Shadows (Lux, #0.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Shadows (Lux, #0.5)Shadows by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
ebook, 179 pages
Published February 21st 2012 by Entangled Publishing
Purchase: Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Description from Goodreads:
The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane.

Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in.

Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence...and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My Review:

Having read Obsidian first, I knew what was coming when I started Shadows, but it didn't make it any less sad.

What I loved most about this novella is actually getting to learn Dawson, while getting to see another side of Daemon. The boys are pretty much exact opposites, and although Daemon isn't crazy about Dawson's feelings for Bethany, a human girl, he tries to be there for his brother.

Knowing how their story would end, I was sure that when the moment came, it wouldn't be a big shock. Nope. It still was. There's so much emotion in that scene. Add in the final scene between Daemon and Dee? It is definitely an emotional end, whether or not you know about what is in store.

Shadows manages to include Armentrout's usual humorous lines; most of which come from Dee. Seriously, the scene between Dawson and Dee in his bedroom? Priceless.

I'm going to keep this short, as this is only a novella, but if you're planning to skip over this prequel, I'd say you're missing out. Yes, you know what to expect. But Shadows is still an emotional ride worth experiencing.

I apologize for this being late. I saved the review, but never actually hit publish. My brain doesn't work well while I'm sick. I'm rewriting my Deity review since it was mainly just fangirling...and I'm sure you want to read something else besides HJFHEJTYEIUT^#*^T*#(YHDGHSGFJSGJFGJ...because that is pretty much what my review is right now. With some Aiden/Seth love added in, of course.
