Book Review: "Deity" by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Deity (Covenant, #3)Deity by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Paperback, 360 pages
Expected publication: November 6th 2012 by Spencer Hill Press
Pre-Order: Amazon -- Barnes & Noble
Description from Goodreads:
"History is on repeat, and things didn't go so well the last time. "

Alexandria isn't sure she's going to make it to her eighteenth birthday--to her Awakening. A long-forgotten, fanatical order is out to kill her, and if the Council ever discovers what she did in the Catskills, she's a goner... and so is Aiden.

If that's not freaky enough, whenever Alex and Seth spend time "training"--which really is just Seth's code word for some up-close and personal one-on-one time--she ends up with another mark of the Apollyon, which brings her one step closer to Awakening ahead of schedule. Awesome.

But as her birthday draws near, her entire world shatters with a startling revelation and she's caught between love and Fate. One will do anything to protect her. One has been lying to her since the beginning. Once the gods have revealed themselves, unleashing their wrath, lives will be irrevocably changed... and destroyed.

Those left standing will discover if love is truly greater than Fate...

My Review:
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My first reaction after finishing Deity: What the hell just happened?

I’ve never read a book that screwed with my emotions as much as Deity.

I don’t even know where to begin without spoiling anything, because there is so much that happens in Deity. So. Much.

Earlier on in the series we learn about Alex being the second Apollyon. In PURE, we learn that she is considered a threat and that the Furies want her dead.Well, I thought shiznit (trying to keep it PG here) went down in Pure…but I was wrong. Deity takes it to a whole other level.

Deity is built upon secrets. Everyone has one - some of which can be harmful to others. Alex has grown a lot since the beginning of the series. She’s always been a tough heroine, but she’s finally beginning to see that knee-jerk reactions can be problematic.

She’s killed her mother. She’s lost her best friend. And she has found out that she is the second Apollyon; and that by fate, she is destined to be one with Seth. Enough for any teenager to have to deal with, right? Nope. Alex’s life gets turned upside down in Deity. She’s running off of hope that she can stop the First from becoming the God Killer. But hope isn’t enough.

Honestly, this is a hard book to review because I really can’t justify spoiling the story. No matter how much I may want to talk about all the feelings I have right now. My Aiden fangirl is happy, or she was happy until, you know…but my Seth fangirl? My heart is hurting.

As someone who isn’t really a fan of love triangles (something I’ve stated before), I found myself worried when I started Pure last year. But then when I finished Pure, and saw where Armentrout was taking the story, I found that I didn’t mind the love triangle. In fact, going into Deity, I was actually a fan of both boys. But then my Seth fangirl died out about halfway in – it’s hard not to like Seth, until you reach the mid point in Deity. That is all I’m saying on that one. That. Is. All.

Deity made me want to throw my book across the room numerous times, and to me, that just shows how great Armentrout is at her craft. Because when a reader is that invested in characters from a book, the author has clearly done something right.

Oh, and that ending? I need the next book pronto!
